The Ekiti State Peoples Democratic Party has described the agricultural cargo airport project of the state government as another avenue to steal money.
The PDP stated this as the state government on Monday named the consultant for the project.
The Commissioner for Information, Mr Muyiwa Olumilua, said the State Executive Council had approved the engagement of Messrs Kefe Engineering Limited as the consultant for the design and supervision of the Ekiti State Agricultural Cargo Airport project.
In a statement on Monday on the EXCO resolutions at its virtual meeting held last week, Olumilua said, “The consultant was shortlisted and finally chosen as suitable, after a selective tender process and evaluation of the technical bids submitted by each of the prospective consultants.
“The duration of the consultancy would cover up to the expiration of the project/contract.”
The Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, had during an on-the-spot assessment of the airport project site a fortnight ago, assured residents that the project would be completed in the lifetime of his administration in view of its importance to agricultural development in the state.
Olumilua disclosed that the council also approved the appointments of two traditional rulers following their selection by warrant chiefs who found them most suitable.
According to Olumilua, the two are Prince Ajibewa Adeniran Oluwafemi of the Ajibewa Ruling House as the new Olorin of Orin Ekiti in the Ido/Osi Local Government Area and Prince Olatunji Olatunde as the Onimesi of Imesi Ekiti, in the Gboyin Local Government Area.
But the PDP in Ekiti described the airport project as “an avenue for corruption.”
The state PDP Caretaker Committee Secretary, Diran Odeyemi, alleged that the airport was a ploy by Fayemi “to take away the money of Ekiti to contest the presidential election. The people of Ekiti should resist that vehemently.”
Odeyemi said, “Of what importance is the airport project to an average Ekiti man? Compare it to the bridge built by former Governor Ayodele Fayose in the Ekiti State capital! People are benefitting from the bridge. How many people will benefit from this airport project? It is an avenue for corruption.
“A government that specialises in sacking its workers but knows how to construct Governor’s Lodge in Abuja and approving a consultant for the building of airport is obviously not a serious government,” the PDP scribe said.
