Worried by the need to settle the ravaging internal rancour within the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Oyo state, Governor Seyi Makinde on Monday inaugurates a seven man elders committee to help identify, proffer solution, reunite the party and solve the lingering crisis.
The Makinde led government had been rocked with series of internal rancour, especially on by members of the coalition that worked together for the 2019 political victory achieved by the umbrella party.
According to the Governor, the task before the forum, which mainly comprises of elders and party stalwarts, is to address the various challenges confronting the party by sorting out members with legitimate expectations and entitlement.
The Forum to be chaired by a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr Saka Balogun has Chief Jacob Adetoro, Chief Sunday Ogunlade, former First Lady, Mrs Mutiat Ladoja, Ex-Minister of the FCT, Oloye Jumoke Akinjide, PDP State Chairman, Mr Kunmi Mustapha and Chief Layiwola Baale as members.
Oloye Akinjide was inaugurated in absentia as she was said to be presently lockdown in Abuja due to interstate travel restrictions.
The Governor said, “The task before this committee is to assist us to get rid of all the challenges confronting our party, PDP in Oyo State. Yes, failure is hard to take, but success is harder to manage because expectations are quite high.
“It’s been one year and about two weeks in office for this administration and for some of our party members expectations have not been met either rightly or wrongly. Some have legitimate requests and expectations but some are just being used by external forces outside our party against the party.
“So, we need to sieve the chaff from the wheat and where our members have their legitimate expectations and legitimate entitlements, I want that to be brought out so that we can address the issues.”
The Chairman of the committee, Dr Balogun expressed the readiness of the committee to carry out the task assigned to them as soon as terms and references of the assignment is given.
He commended the Governor for the quality service his administration has been rendering to the people of Oyo State in the last one year.
Balogun, a member of the PDP Board of Trustee while responding on behalf of the Forum said although some of the problems confronting the party are already known, the committee will ensure that the mandate before the Forum is achieved in the interest of the party and the state.
He said “The Forum has been christened Steering Committee for elders to look into the roots of some agitations here and there, which the governor has admitted.
“Some have legitimate agitations to feel the way they feel because some have legitimate image aspirations having waited behind the fence for eight years during the governance of the previous administration.
“I don’t run down anybody or any institutions because certainly, the experience of many of us and the plight of the masses was not anything to write about during the last administration.
“So, there was high expectation when this government came into office. And I have said it a number of times that this government is delivering quality service.
“People who have been requested to join the fold to administer governance are people of high calibre and there is nothing to complain about.
“But as the governor has said and since you have not written a blue print of some of the problems he has asked us to go and look into, it is not for me to give a one man assessment of the problem, but some of the problems we already know.
“So, we thank you for this opportunity to serve and by the grace of God we will not let you down.”
