The Africa Clean-Up Initiative has increased payment for the plastic bottle collectors.
Its Founder and Executive Director, Alexander Akigbe, said it was the organisation’s way of giving back to the people.
According to Akigbe, Coca-Cola Foundation sponsored the project to give them double the value of what they usually earn from plastic bottles.
“For every kilogram of pet bottles donated before, N20 is what they get in return, but now it has been doubled up to N40. This has encouraged them to gather lots of plastics from the environment, which could have ended up blocking the drainage system and causing flood in the community,” he said.
Team Leader of Quivers Foundation Olajide Ojora said the project should be done regularly, as it is friendly and is a way of keeping the environment tidy.
She said the government should encourage every company using pet bottles for their products to make it a point of duty to check where the pet bottles were dumped.
A beneficiary, Jemila Kumolu, said picking of plastic bottles has helped her to feed her family.
